Gentle lymphatic care

Manual Lymphatic Drainage & OMT

Gentle, hands-on care using manual lymphatic techniques and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). Our holistic approach considers fluid movement, tissue tension, breathing and everyday comfort. Swelling needs clinical assessment before treatment.

Hands-on care

Gentle, Hands-On Lymphatic Care

Manual lymphatic drainage uses light, directed skin movements. Osteopathic lymphatic techniques are a related approach that may include soft-tissue release, breathing techniques and lymphatic pumps.

Sessions are calm and unhurried. You’ll lie comfortably while the clinician uses slow, light movements and, where appropriate, osteopathic techniques around the upper chest and diaphragm. Breathing plays a part too, so you may be guided through slow, deep breaths during treatment. Loose, comfortable clothing helps.

Before any hands-on work, we ask about your swelling: when it started, whether it’s on one side, and whether it’s painful or red. New, painful, red or one-sided swelling needs a medical assessment first.

Many people find the sessions relaxing. The pressure is much lighter than a typical massage, which surprises some people the first time. We’ll also talk about what you can do between visits, including gentle movement and breathing exercises at home.

If you’ve been diagnosed with lymphedema, bring any notes from your specialist, and any compression garments you’ve been prescribed.

What care may include

  • Gentle lymphatic drainage and soft-tissue techniques.
  • OMT around the upper chest and diaphragm, with selected lymphatic pump techniques.
  • Guided breathing, movement and self-care advice.

Potential benefits

Where Lymphatic Care Fits

Lymphatic care works best as one part of a broader plan. For lymphedema, that plan may also include compression, exercise, skin care and a trained lymphedema specialist.

We’ll be honest about what it can and can’t do for your situation.

Progress is reviewed together at each visit.

  • Managing selected swelling as part of a broader care plan.
  • Easing a sense of heaviness or tightness in appropriate patients.
  • Supporting comfort and ease of movement.

Added benefits vary by condition. Evidence for lymphatic OMT is limited, and manual drainage findings are mixed. Results vary.

Temporary soreness or discomfort can happen after a session; tell your clinician if symptoms get worse. Suspected blood clots, active skin infection or unstable heart failure need medical care before treatment, and recent surgery or significant heart or kidney disease needs individual clearance.

Your plan may start with a short series of sessions followed by a review. If swelling isn’t changing the way we hoped, we’ll talk about other options or a referral rather than simply booking more of the same. Please read the full precautions before your first session.
